[Upcoming Event] Counterterrorism Efforts and The Role of Mental Health in Preventing Radicalization

The rise of digital platforms has fundamentally transformed the way extremist groups operate, enabling them to disseminate propaganda and recruit vulnerable individuals without the need for direct, in-person contact. This shift has made it easier for radical ideologies to spread, often targeting those experiencing isolation, identity crises, or personal grievances. Reintegration of radicalized individuals into society remains a significant challenge, as some may revert to extremist beliefs even after undergoing rehabilitation programs.
While much attention has been paid to the social and political aspects of radicalization, mental health is often overlooked. Psychological distress, trauma, and struggles with identity can make individuals more susceptible to extremist narratives. Furthermore, unresolved mental health issues can hinder the effectiveness of rehabilitation and reintegration efforts, making it harder for individuals to break free from cycles of extremism. Families of radicalized individuals, particularly spouses and children, also face immense psychological and social challenges, highlighting the need for comprehensive support systems.
