The Trend of Terrorism in Indonesia

Terrorism in Indonesia has undergone significant changes from 2002 to 2025, shifting from large-scale attacks carried out by Jamaah Islamiyah in the early 2000s to sporadic attacks carried out by networks affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) in subsequent years. Counterterrorism efforts led by the Indonesian National Police, the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), and Detachment 88 have increased the number of arrests, especially after the 2018 Counterterrorism Law allowed for preventive action before attacks occur. Although the number of attacks has declined in recent years, extremist groups continue to spread propaganda online and recruit young people through digital platforms such as Roblox. Between 2002 and July 2025, a total of 2,089 convicted terrorists were released, with 100 of them becoming repeat offenders, highlighting the ongoing challenges in deradicalization and reintegration efforts.
